If you follow @knowbetterlife on Instagram, then you’ve seen the monthly reminders to clean your makeup brushes. It’s fast and simple! Let’s start with why you should be cleaning them.
Keeping your brushes clean does 3 things:
- Extends their life.
- Allows for better application.
- Removes dirt, dust and bacteria to prevent clogged pores and breakouts.
How do you clean your brushes in under 5 minutes?
Step 1 : Shampoo your bristles.
Put a dime- to quarter-size amount (depending on the size of your brush) of shampoo into the palm of your hand.
Important note: Use a shampoo that does not contain parabens of silicones, as those ingredients are not only potentially harmful to your health, but they can also cause build-up on the bristles. We prefer Beautycounter’s Daily Shampoo because it contains grapefruit peel oil which helps to remove residue build-up.

Step 2: Swirl your brush.
Gently move your dirty brush in circular motions in the shampoo in the palm of your hand.

Step 3 : Rinse your brush.
Rinse the bristles of your brush with warm water until water runs clear. Keep the bristles pointing downwards, so that water does not fill the base of the brush. If bristles are discoloured, repeat wash, swirl and rinse.

Step 4 : Lay flat to dry.
Lay brushes flat to dry on a clean towel. Do not let water sit in the base of the brush. Use a blow-dryer for faster drying and extra softness.

With these 4 steps you can clean a handle of makeup brushes in less than 5 minutes!
How often should you clean them?
Foundation and concealer brushes, at least once a week.
Brushes for the eye area (crease, all-over, precision), every two weeks if you use them often.
All other brushes, minimum once a month.
